THE ORDER OF ADJECTIVES
IN ENGLISH
When two or more adjectives are used
to describe something, there is a set order for them. The order is generally as
below:
1: opinion
2: size
3: age
4: shape
5: color
6: origin
7: material
8: purpose
The following example with eight adjectives is ordered
correctly:
For example:
A lovely, large, antique, round, black, Spanish, wooden,
mixing bowl.
(These adjectives are modifying the noun bowl.)
Lovely (opinion)
Large (size)
Antique (age)
Round (shape)
Black (color)
Spanish (origin)
Wooden (material)
Mixing (purpose)
Note: The use of two or more adjectives is
called enumeration of adjectives.
